Idaho Paycheck Calculator

Idaho taxes income above a small zero-rate band at a flat 5.3%, after the same standard deduction you take on your federal return. For 2026 the state's $205-per-child tax credit has expired, and withholding tables were updated midyear to reflect it.

Gross pay $3,238.46
Federal income tax −$372.85

What changed for 2026

  • Idaho's child tax credit of $205 per qualifying child expired after tax year 2025. The Tax Commission issued updated 2026 withholding tables on July 31, 2026, and told employers to use them going forward without adjusting earlier paychecks.
  • The income tax rate stays at 5.3%, the rate set by a 2025 law that cut it from 5.695%.

Idaho pay rules worth knowing

  • Employers must pay wages at least once a month, on regular paydays they set in advance.
  • Whether you quit or are fired, your final pay is due by the next regular payday or within 10 days (not counting weekends and holidays), whichever comes first. If you ask in writing, it's due within 48 hours.

How Idaho taxes your wages

Idaho’s income tax has three pieces:

  1. The federal standard deduction. Idaho starts from federal adjusted gross income and lets you subtract the same standard deduction you take federally: $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly and $24,150 for heads of household in 2026.
  2. A zero-rate band. The first slice of taxable income is taxed at 0%. For 2025 it was $4,811 for single filers and $9,622 for joint filers. It’s indexed for inflation, and the 2026 amounts hadn’t been published when this page was checked, so the calculator uses the 2025 figures.
  3. A flat 5.3% rate on everything above that.

Put together, a single filer pays no Idaho income tax on roughly the first $20,900 of wages, and 5.3% on each dollar above. On a $40,000 salary, the effective rate is under 3%. At higher incomes it approaches 5.3%.

What changed in 2026: the child credit expired

From 2018 through 2025, Idaho gave parents a credit of $205 for each qualifying child. That credit expired at the end of 2025 under the law that created it. With it gone, a family with two children owes up to $410 more in Idaho tax for 2026 than they would have with the credit.

The Tax Commission didn’t publish updated withholding tables until July 31, 2026. Its notice told employers to use the new tables from then on and not to go back and adjust earlier paychecks. If your Idaho W-4 claims children, your withholding for the first part of 2026 may have assumed the old credit, and you could owe a little when you file. Reviewing your Idaho W-4 now can help.

The grocery credit

Idaho offers a grocery credit on your income tax return, meant to offset sales tax on food. For 2025 and later, it’s $155 per person in your household. It doesn’t change your paycheck, but it’s part of your Idaho tax picture when you file.

The W-4 calculator helps set your federal withholding, and the income tax calculator estimates the federal adjusted gross income Idaho starts from.

Estimates only. Your employer’s payroll system, your W-4 and your Idaho W-4 determine your actual paycheck.

Frequently asked questions

What is Idaho's income tax rate in 2026?

5.3% on taxable income above a zero-rate band. For 2025 that band covered the first $4,811 of taxable income for single filers and $9,622 for joint filers. Idaho adjusts the band for inflation each year.

Does Idaho use the federal standard deduction?

Yes. Idaho taxable income starts from federal adjusted gross income, and Idaho allows the same standard deduction you claim on your federal return, $16,100 for single filers in 2026. That's why Idaho tax on a modest salary is lower than the 5.3% rate suggests.

Why did my Idaho withholding go up partway through 2026?

The state's $205-per-child tax credit expired after 2025, and the Tax Commission updated the 2026 withholding tables on July 31, 2026, to stop building it in. Parents may notice slightly higher Idaho withholding on paychecks after the change.

What is the Idaho grocery credit?

It's a credit of $155 per person for tax year 2025 and later, meant to offset sales tax on food. You claim it on your Idaho income tax return; it doesn't affect your paycheck.

What is the minimum wage in Idaho?

$7.25 an hour, the same as the federal rate. Tipped employees can be paid $3.35 an hour if tips make up the difference, and new employees under 20 can be paid $4.25 an hour for their first 90 days.
