Example: a $89,200 salary in New York

The median household income in New York is about $89,210 (2025 data). Here's what one earner with that salary, paid every two weeks, filing single with no pre-tax deductions, would see on each paycheck in 2026:

Gross pay $3,430.77
Federal income tax −$415.15
Social Security −$212.71
Medicare −$49.75
New York income tax −$162.41
NY Paid Family Leave (0.432%) −$14.82
NY disability (up to $0.60/week) −$1.20
Take-home pay $2,574.73

That's $66,943 a year in take-home pay, or 25% of gross pay going to taxes.

What changed for 2026

  • The five lowest state income tax rates fell by 0.1 percentage point each, to 3.9%, 4.4%, 5.15%, 5.4% and 5.9%. The bracket thresholds and the higher rates didn't change.
  • Paid Family Leave rose from 0.388% of wages (maximum $354.53) in 2025 to 0.432% (maximum $411.91) in 2026.
  • The minimum wage rose by $0.50, to $17.00 in New York City, Long Island and Westchester and $16.00 elsewhere. The Department of Labor says rates will stay the same on January 1, 2027.

New York pay rules worth knowing

  • Manual workers must be paid weekly, no later than seven calendar days after the end of the week. Clerical and other workers must be paid at least twice a month on regular paydays.
  • If your job ends, your final wages are due no later than the regular payday for the pay period in which it ended, whether you quit or were let go.

What New York withholds

A New York paycheck can carry up to four state and local lines on top of federal taxes:

  • New York State income tax, at the progressive rates in the table above.
  • Paid Family Leave (PFL), 0.432% of wages in 2026, capped as described in the FAQ.
  • Disability benefits (SDI or DBL), at most $0.60 a week.
  • New York City or Yonkers income tax, only if you live there (or, for Yonkers, work there).

The calculator includes the state tax, PFL and disability. For NYC or Yonkers, use the Local income tax rate field (see below).

The recapture: why high earners pay a flat rate

New York’s brackets aren’t a pure progressive schedule at higher incomes. Once New York adjusted gross income passes $107,650, the state starts recapturing the benefit of the lower brackets, and over a $50,000 phase-in range the tax moves toward the rate on your top bracket. At high enough incomes, you effectively pay your top rate on every dollar. The calculator applies the recapture, so the state tax in the take-home table at $150,000 and $200,000 is higher than the bracket table alone would suggest.

New York City income tax

NYC residents pay city income tax on top of state tax, with four brackets for 2026:

Single filers’ taxable income Rate
Up to $12,000 3.078%
$12,000 – $25,000 3.762%
$25,000 – $50,000 3.819%
Over $50,000 3.876%

Married couples filing jointly use thresholds of $21,600, $45,000 and $90,000. Because most of a typical salary falls in the top bracket, entering 3.876% in the local tax field gives a close (slightly high) estimate of the city tax for most full-time workers. City tax is based on where you live, not where you work, so commuters from Westchester, Long Island, New Jersey or Connecticut don’t pay it.

Yonkers

Yonkers works differently. Residents pay a surcharge of 16.75% of their net state income tax, so to estimate it, multiply the state income tax shown in your results by 0.1675. Nonresidents who work in Yonkers pay 0.5% of their Yonkers wages, which you can enter directly in the local tax field.

PFL funds up to 12 weeks of paid, job-protected leave to bond with a new child or care for a family member; in 2026 the maximum weekly benefit is $1,228.53. The disability deduction covers off-the-job illness or injury. Both are small compared with income tax, but they’re why your New York stub has two extra lines that a no-tax-state stub doesn’t.

For full-year planning, the income tax calculator estimates your federal liability, and the 401(k) calculator shows how pre-tax savings lower your taxable wages over time.

Estimates only. Your employer’s payroll system, your W-4 and IT-2104 determine your actual paycheck.

Frequently asked questions

Do I pay NYC tax if I live in New Jersey and work in Manhattan?

No. New York City's personal income tax applies only to city residents. You'll pay New York State nonresident income tax on your New York wages, and New Jersey then gives you a credit for the tax New York actually charged on that income.

What is NY SDI on my pay stub?

It's New York's disability benefits insurance (often labeled SDI or DBL). Employees pay 0.5% of wages, but no more than $0.60 a week, which works out to at most $31.20 a year. It funds partial wage replacement if you can't work because of an off-the-job illness or injury.

What is the most I'll pay for NY Paid Family Leave in 2026?

$411.91. The 0.432% rate applies only up to the statewide average annual wage ($1,833.63 a week, or $95,348.76 a year), so anyone earning more than that pays the same maximum.

Is the MCTMT taken out of my paycheck?

No. The Metropolitan Commuter Transportation Mobility Tax is imposed on employers and self-employed people in the MTA region, and state law prohibits employers from deducting it from employees' wages.

How does Yonkers tax work?

Yonkers residents pay a surcharge equal to 16.75% of their net New York State income tax. People who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere pay a nonresident earnings tax of 0.5% of their Yonkers wages.
