What changed for 2026

  • The flat income tax rate fell from 4.25% for 2025 to 3.99% for 2026 and later years.

North Carolina pay rules worth knowing

  • Employers can pay daily, weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly, but they must pay on a regular payday.
  • When you leave a job for any reason, all wages due must be paid on or before the next regular payday. Commissions and bonuses are due on the first regular payday after the amount can be calculated.

How North Carolina taxes your wages

North Carolina has a single tax rate for everyone, 3.99% in 2026. Before the rate applies, you subtract the standard deduction for your filing status, and families with children subtract a per-child deduction that phases out as income rises. Both are covered in the FAQ below.

Because the rate is flat, once your income is above the standard deduction, a raise costs 3.99 cents per dollar in North Carolina tax. At higher incomes, your effective rate approaches 3.99% because the standard deduction becomes a smaller share of your pay. The take-home table above shows the state tax at each salary.

What the rate cut is worth

The rate was 4.25% for 2025 and is 3.99% for 2026. For a single filer with no children, the 0.26-point cut saves about $26 a year for every $10,000 of income above the standard deduction. On a $60,000 salary, that’s about $123 a year, or under $5 per biweekly paycheck. It’s a real but small change, which is why most people won’t notice it on their stubs.

The Department of Revenue says more cuts may come in 2027 and later, but only if state revenue meets certain triggers, so the 2027 rate isn’t set yet.

Pay timing and your last paycheck

North Carolina gives employers wide latitude on pay frequency: daily, weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly are all allowed, as long as there’s a regular payday. If you’re comparing a monthly-pay job with a biweekly one, the annual take-home is the same, but budgeting on 12 larger checks instead of 26 smaller ones takes some planning. The calculator lets you switch the pay frequency to see each.

Your final paycheck is due by the next regular payday whether you quit or were let go. Commissions and bonuses that can’t be calculated yet are due on the first regular payday after the amount is known.

Making your paycheck go further

  • Claim your children. The child deduction is worth up to $3,000 per child, and at 3.99% that’s up to about $120 per child each year. Make sure your withholding form (Form NC-4) reflects them.
  • Use pre-tax savings. Traditional 401(k) contributions lower your federal taxable wages. Enter a contribution rate in the calculator above to see the effect on each paycheck, and use the 401(k) calculator for the long-term picture.
  • Check the whole year. The income tax calculator estimates your federal tax for the year so you can see whether withholding is on track.

Estimates only. Your employer’s payroll system, your W-4 and NC-4 determine your actual paycheck.

Frequently asked questions

What is North Carolina's income tax rate in 2026?

It's 3.99% for every filer, applied after the standard deduction and any child deduction. The Department of Revenue notes that further cuts may apply starting in 2027 if state revenue meets certain triggers.

What is the North Carolina child deduction?

It's a deduction for each qualifying child that shrinks as income rises. Single filers with income of $20,000 or less get $3,000 per child, and the amount falls in $500 steps to zero above $70,000. Joint filers get the full $3,000 up to $40,000, with the deduction ending above $140,000.

How much is the tipped minimum wage in North Carolina?

Employers can pay tipped workers as little as $2.13 an hour in cash wages, as long as tips bring total pay to at least $7.25 an hour. If they don't, the employer must make up the difference.

How much is the North Carolina standard deduction?

It's $12,750 for single filers, $19,125 for heads of household and $25,500 for married couples filing jointly. These amounts are set in state law and weren't changed for 2026, so only the rate cut lowers your 2026 tax compared with 2025.
